Canada is ideal to achieve FIRE (I'll explain) but in the Netherlands, it's a whole different story

In this video, I'll talk about (at a high level) the main difference in the tax system between Canada and the Netherlands, and how it impacts achieving financial freedom (through FIRE). I'll also go through a few things (and misconceptions) about the Canadian tax system that makes ...

    I'm really glad you shared your story, it's been almost 6 months since I had my last job (after working for almost 9 years) and I still feel pretty dead inside and uninterested in doing anything. I'm really glad to hear that you said that it took you about a year to get out of the rut of just existing. I spent about 4 months traveling to 9 different countries and even that felt pretty hollow and empty most of the time. But I think this gives me some hope that I'll get out the other end ok. One of my biggest regrets is staying in the Bay Area for so long after being able to work from home, I really should have moved somewhere else. I think I probably would have had an extra ~50k if I just moved somewhere cheaper earlier. I think another huge mistake was not downsizing sooner, but I was way too burnt out to move out of my $3500 apartment but I really should have moved out when my roommates did (in addition to being burned out after they left I really liked the space and not having to live with people). Great video thanks for sharing.

      hey there, thank you for watching and your comment! I went with an organization called IVHQ when I went to Kenya (they do charge a fee though, acting as a middleman between you and the local organizations). The second time (Nepal) I used a website called Workaway and organized it myself, but you really have to spend your time researching and looking for opportunities that aligns with you, it was a lot more involved, but you do save a bunch of money (which can be used towards helping locals instead, that was my reasoning). I think if you are starting out and it's your first time, definitely go with an organization because the experience is much better for exposing yourself to different cultures/volunteering abroad etc. Best of luck! ❤️

      @andrewxu 12 дней назад

      hey there! I think the way I see it is, "i'll work when i need to". In my case (because of my burnout) I was in a way forced to just quit and prioritize my health (best decision ever). But for those who know sometime in the future they are likely to want to start a family, I think it's important to factor those costs into their FIRE number as well. But for those who are unsure, like myself, I tend to see "FIRE" as more of an FI than RE. I'll share more around my thinking when I pulled that trigger (to FIRE) in a future video, it's a rollercoaster of thoughts and emotions! Remember, it's never "all of nothing", FIRE doesn't mean one would never work a single day in their life again, but it's the freedom to choose to work, and in areas they enjoy and find meaningful. Hope that helps!

    Hey Andrew, I started my journey in the web development in the past year actually, and I recently find your channel. I think there is no coincidences. So please read this, is an important message, the most important message for any person actually: We are actually fallen and corrupted creatures. We are full of injustices, wickedness, lies and evil. Every human being have the same problem, since the fall of Adam, our hearts are actually seek and go to do evil. We all say lies. We all steal something, even something small or without "importance". We all fall in sexual inmorality like having sex before marrige, or cheat your wife/husband, watch pornography, look other people with lust and corrupted desires, look them in the street, social media, internet, etc. We all hate someone in our hearts, that's actually consider to be a killer in the eyes of God. We made fake gods to worship them and not to deal with our problem: We all fail and we do horrible things in this earth. Those things I mention before are actually part of the Law of God, and WE BROKE the Law of God many many times. We are actually criminals, sinners, who made crimes against God and our neighbors. God is our Creator, He is Holy, Good and Just and He hates evil and He punish all the wicked actions of the humans beings. He establised a day when He is going to judge every human being in all the history of this Earth, the Final Day of Jugdment. We are all guilty and in that day we going to have all the consequences of our wickedness, We all deserve the eternal condenation, Hell, the Holy and Just Wrath of God, because we broke all the Law of God. We actually have a huge problem with the infinite Justice of God, and we can't escape from that destiny, we are guilty and we can't do anything to change that. We are actually lost for ever. But, God is very very Merciful and God knows we are actually lost for ever, so He did something. God the Father send His Son LORD Jesus Christ to save us. The God of Israel Himself becomes a human being, Jesus of Nazareth, and He die for us, He die for our sins. LORD Jesus in the cross take all the warth and punishment what we deserve for our sins and wickedness and He die for us He die for our sins. He paid the debt with the infinite Justice of God what we have. By His Grace we are save not by any human work of us because we only deserve hell only. That's why when you believe in LORD Jesus and His work of Salvation and Redemption you have salvation, redemption, forgiveness of sins, eternal life and reconciliation with God only by LORD Jesus. LORD Jesus was dead but He rose at the third day, and He is now sit at the right hand of God His Father but He is coming back soon to the Earth as the Supreme Judge, and He will put and end to all the wicked things and evil of the humans beings for ever, including yours if you don't repent, oh, japanese people. That's why we say to you in love and Truth, repent of your sins and wickedness and believe in LORD Jesus and His Gospel and follow Him. Without Christ you are actually lost for ever and ever. If you die, you are going to Judgement of God, and if you don't believe and follow LORD Jesus, after the Judgement you are going to the eternal condenation for ever. That's why with a great sense of urgency take this message with extreme seriously, your life and soul are in danger: you could die today at any moment, you never know. Come to Christ Jesus, without Him we are nothing and the eternal condenation is at the door. Come to Christ oh dear people. Blessings to you and your family, greetings from Chile 🇨🇱

      hey Ahmad, micromanaging is one of the worst...that's also one of the reasons that broke me at my final job. When I mentioned "dysfunctional" about my last job in the video, micromanaging from non-technical project manager was one of the reasons. It absolutely sucks because it feels like you're a pilot handcuffed to take a back seat watching the plane crash into the Himalayas, because of....certain people's ego, "authority" and stubbornness. Zero regret ejecting myself from that plane to tell the story haha. Hope you're doing ok now, and be kind to yourself!

    Hey thanks for the video. I relate to a lot of what you talked about. I’ve been in the software industry for 16 years or so and admittedly I’ve been very close to or at burn out several times. What I realized helped me get past those moments has been to let myself organically grow and in a way resist the external expectations and pressures to grow by peers, managers and the company as a whole. I know it’s easier said than done since they want you to keep moving up really for their own interests like bringing in new workers continuously. I think we all have our own internal speed where we feel our best and if you mess with that it can really throw you off and make you burn out faster. Some people move faster and others slower. As someone on the slower end I’ve felt I had to try to control my growth at my speed even with my manager pushing for artificial growth that I wasn’t ready for. It’s taken many years to find my best pace of growth and I think finding that is very important to create for yourself a healthy growth environment. In summary, don’t let others dictate how fast or slow you grow. Try to find your pace and try to grow at your own pace. Also learn to recognize when you’re close to burnout so that you can take care of yourself.

    • @andrewxu
      @andrewxu 14 дней назад

      hey there, I absolutely agree with you! It's most stressful when we're "pushed" to grow in ways and at speeds that does not align with ours, and the moment we don't "move" the way a company wants us, we'll be marked as "non performers". I'm happy you've managed to find a balance, take care!

    Is there really a way to defer capital gains tax in Canada? I googled it and all I see is for "Eligible small business corporation shares". Could you share more about this?

    • @andrewxu
      @andrewxu 24 дня назад

      hey there, in Canada, capital gains or losses are deferred to until you "sell" (or the more formal term would be "disposed of") the capital property (investments, etc), at which point it will be considered a taxable event for the year, thereby deferring any capital gains tax to the future when you sell. Keeping track of the ACB (Adjusted Cost Basis) and understanding FMV (Fair Market Value) is required to better understand capital gains. Source: www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/individuals/topics/about-your-tax-return/tax-return/completing-a-tax-return/personal-income/line-12700-capital-gains/when-report-a-gain-loss.html hope this helps!

    Isn't it also true that in NL the salaries are quite a bit lower than in Toronto, tech related that is? Also, check out European law. If you naturalize and are in the Dutch tax system, you can see if you could move to a different country together and switch tax systems. Socially that might be tough, there are many factors of course.

    • @andrewxu
      @andrewxu 24 дня назад

      hey Melvin, thanks for the tip, I'll look into it! As for the salary, I'm not sure so won't be able to comment on that. But what I know is that people here tend to get WAY more vacation days, vacation pays, and a better social security net. For example one can be mentally unwell to work and the company is expected to pay their salary (a certain %) for up to 2 years I believe (don't quote me on this 🤣), which is unheard of in North America! It's quite interesting to see the differences, and I get the sense that people's "well-being" are more prioritized here, than it is in North America.

  • @rexie1282
    @rexie1282 25 дней назад

    I live in the NL and my FI/RE journey has indeed changed. Before coming here, my aim was traditional FI/RE, but given their tax system, it felt I was being penalized for saving aggressively. But currently, I have work-life balance, 40 vacation days and hybrid work setup. So I switched my FI/RE goal to work part-time, say 4x a week, when I'm 50 or 55 and assess it from there. Hope you find what works best for you :)

    • @andrewxu
      @andrewxu 25 дней назад

      hey there, that's also how I'm feeling about the way the tax system here is; it encourages spending rather than saving (anything over the personal tax free limit). I'm still trying to figure out how to navigate this, but I'm really happy to hear you found a good work-life balance! At the end of the day, enjoying the journey (of life) is most important, and you seem to be doing that which is great! Thanks for your comment and take care!

      @@andrewxu Hello! I actually commented to bump up the algo, and wasn't expecting a reply! It's pretty embarrassing but I actually cried in the middle of the video (I dont cry often at all) when u transitioned into the tea making part. I never finished it yesterday and today I'm back to watch my YT tabs and saw your reply. This particular video really struck a chord with me. To begin with, I see alot of shared background with you (asian, male, work in tech + others which i will not elab) so when I watched the first half of the video after a rough day at work it really resonated with me. Keep up the good content! In terms of video making... I honestly have no comments, I'm the least qualified person to comment on video making. BUT, one thing I noticed vs the first video i watched (the burnout video) was how you have different filming angles and weave in different transitions + music + lifestyle segway while delivering the key message you wanted to.

    I grew up in Markham Ontario - so I was witness to the majority of my peers going through the exact same thing. “A stands for average” was a joke that I heard so often, but when I would see some of these brilliant classmates start stressing out over high 80% averages and only getting accepted into certain pristine universities I started to realize that this ‘joke’ was actually quite true. Thanks for sharing and being vulnerable with us Andrew. And thank you for also starting to take care of your inner child. We’re cheering you on 😊

I realized that these "constructive debates" and useless meetings, were more about re-filling the demon's ego cups rather than truly fixing an existing problem. thanks for sharing! i think it's good to recognize how our experiences have shaped us, but it is important to do so without glorifying victimhood. we all have had negative experiences big and small, and now "childhood trauma" doesn't even mean anything anymore because everyone is saying they have childhood trauma. yes shit happened, but let's not build our identities around that. lets instead empower ourselves to move forward and be happy and successful. i think that's more productive than dwelling and over-unpacking.

    • @andrewxu
      @andrewxu Месяц назад

      I understand you 100%. I'm currently in the process of "reacclimatize" myself to humans lol. People can be draining at times, and if you are put into an environment with toxic people, that's no bueno and you'll eventually associate people with negative experiences (which is probably what we both have in common). But I'm starting to learn that people is also necessary to live a healthy and happy life, through community, and supportive, understanding close group of friends. This is something I'm working towards, undoing those damages, including the traumas we've had as a child that led us to associate people with negative experiences. ❤️
